Killing them softly…

22 May

Fifteen years ago, on one of my notorious rants, I claimed that the goal of the BLM was to send all the wild horses to slaughter. Any number of people considered me as having gone off the deep end back then. During the years between then and now, the combined forces of the pro-horse groups managed to shut down the American slaughterhouses, only to see Mexico and Canada increase the number of American horses slaughtered (up 38% since last year).

While the propaganda machine continues to spout lies about starving horses and make false accusations of thousands of horses wandering the backstreets and parks, the forces of evil are plotting to do exactly what I had forecasted.

Unloading horses at the border

Consider: The failure of the Federal Government to deny inspectors to equine slaughterhouses, the gathering storm of  anti-horse forces trying (and so far failing) to open a slaughterhouse in the States and the wildly insane gathering of wild horses off the protected Federal lands to the point where 45,000 now reside in holding pens.

Consider that the BLM is now complaining about the cost of maintaining horses in the holding pens and the discussion now going on is that in order to reduce the cost, they want to change the status of the horses so the BLM can sell them to whomever wants them. Translated: off to slaughter they go.

The long term plan to eradicate wild horses enters its final chapter. The Wild Horse Advisory Board, those wonderful folks who are allegedly members of the general public that advises the BLM, are pro-slaughter advocates. Ex-BLM employees are now players in the organizations promoting slaughter. Everything is set. Expect the word to come dribbling out of DC – all wild horses in the holding pens, all 45,000 of them, will be “euthanized.”

And the BLM continues to decimate the last remaining herds beyond the point of viability. Gelded males, mares filled with PZP, yearlings being rounded up “because the land cannot handle the pressure horses place on it,” yet hours after the last BLM trailer leaves the welfare ranchers unload truckloads of cattle on the same land and remove the fences around the water holes.

Salazar

Are you angry yet? Do you need to be reminded that these are YOUR horses? Congress controls the Department of the Interior, the BLM is part of that Department. Congress can put a stop to it.

S.1176 and HR 2966, known as the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, closes the border and makes it against the law to kill horses for human consumption. Eighty percent of the public is against the slaughter of horses. If you read this article, chances are you are a part of the majority.

The killing of American horses has increased by 38% in 2011 to 133,241. That’s 2,562 per week, 366 per day, 46 per hour – trucked to Canada and Mexico and slaughtered in the most inhumane way possible. All of them fat, mostly healthy (they don’t buy skinny horses!) and all of them wondering what the hell happened to the loving, caring humans, the 80%, who were suppose to stand by them.

Yes, you guessed it, I’m pissed. I’m sick of do-gooder organizations spouting meaningless words, of suits in Congress sitting on the bills “because it’s an election year.” At Habitat for Horses, we work damn hard to save the lives of horses. Investigations, courts, medical bills, slings to help them stand up, thousands of dollars in hay and feed, and they kill the same number in a couple of weeks that we save in a year.

It’s gotta’ stop, guys, but it won’t until a very angry voice is heard from the 80%. Are you ready to scream?

My true feelings reading this, are that of human vengance, on the enemies of God, for there oppression against his creation. 45,000 horses you say ? We have billions of dollars for bombs and air planes, but not enouf for our wild horses ? .

But we apparently DO have enough for our wild horses: we pay for expensive helicopters and pilots to dive bomb them and abort their fetuses and run them to exhaustion and murder them. :-(

Jerry – Would like your point of view asap. We posted this blog on Healing Horses FB wall and got a firm response from Robin Hart and George Roosevelt about you being wrong and we should have checked our facts. They pointed us to this article: http://thepioneerwoman.com/blog/2012/05/the-wild-horses/
Can you provide comment – or come to our FB page to defend your information? https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=291694800922523&id=182368867023
Thanks so much – we hate to lead our “friends” down any wrong path …. and would like to have answers for Robin and George ..

“This is not true!” The comment made on your FB page. Exactly what part is “not true.” I have facts scattered throughout the article, and the person saying it is not true did not give a single fact to dispute. Yes, the BLM does place some horses on ranch land. Oklahoma has thousands of them at a cost of $1.30 a head per day. For those 3,500 horses on that particular ranch, that’s $1,660,000 per year being paid to the ranch to take care of horses that, if left alone, would have cost this country $0. Now the BLM is arguing that they can no longer afford to maintain the captured horses – thus the call to euthanize all of them.

So just where is this article wrong?

Thanks Jerry – I really appreciate your swift response at this hour. I have followed, and been vocal about, the BLM’s activities and the fight against their practices, but I don’t know everything – so your response is valuable.
We side with you and the wild horses, without question, and look forward to seeing your idea … and helping if we can.

It is hard to believe that anyone can fall for the stories told on “the pioneer woman” blog, These people are in it for the money, they get paid well. It is not for the love of horses that they let BLM use their ranch to house these mustang captures. Once the foals are weaned, they are taken away from their mothers. These foals go to places unknown.

I wonder too, Jerry, just where the heck our 80% is!. We have faxed letters, sent emails, made phone calls EVERYDAY FOR MONTHS ON END…AND STILL NOTHING HAPPENS! I am so stuck in a mode on doing that, that I am actually afraid to stop, even tho I KNOW nobody pays any attention. We have been told too many times “not to get rowdy” or “get out of hand, or else we’ll discredit ourselves by being extremists. Well what the heck is left???!!! I am sick and tired of being nice and polite about everything. I’m not saying to go and break the law, but we need to ACT on doing something. Because just like you said, Jerry, we are on the final chapter in our fight against horse slaughter. And so far, we don’t seem to be getting anything done. I so am looking forward to what you have in the works. You’re the best!!

I am part of the 80% give me more facts and I will also write about them. I will sign petitions, whatever, but the thing is to wake up a bunch of people. They are sleeping and the louder we scream the more attention people will pay attention to it.

I really want to stop pulling our horses off the lands that are rightfully theirs and then putting a bunch of cattle there, they will destroy the land faster than any other animal will.

      Jerry has the right idea.

In recent years I have, by degrees, turned my disgust at cattle ranchers and rodeo cowboys and racetrack owners and mustang-hating government agencies into specific actions.

I stopped eating meat and dairy.

I started supporting anti-rodeo organization SHARK in its letter-writing and phone-calling campaigns (Starbucks and Campbell’s Soup, among other companies, subsequently pulled their sponsorship of rodeos).

I refused to watch, read about or even discuss the horse racing industry and its TB and QH “athletes.” No more free publicity to that money-mad producer of slaughter-bound “has-beens.”

I wrote to the states where the last of the mustangs (and wild bison) have been hazed and deprived of water and rounded up and locked in pens, and told them I wouldn’t be visiting and pumping up their economy, nor would my friends. I’ve kept that promise. So have my friends.

What if all of us quit our flesh-eating fixation?
What if all of us turned our backs on rodeos and racing?
What if all of us wrote to Western states’ tourism boards and governors?

Consumer demand — or lack thereof — can be a pretty powerful motivator.

Jerry, I join others here in holding my breath waiting to hear your idea. I’m sure it’s a great one.

Its inhumane to kill these horses and to torture them in the brutal manner they are killed here. It must stop. I am ashamed Canada is responsible for the slaughter of these magnificent creatures. I remember bring young and picking up meat that was so strange at a store. My father in portugeese told me to put that down it’s evil. Then he told me how a beautiful horse got slaughtered in such a free and democratic country. My father did not understand how they can allow such hurt/pain of such magestic innocent animals. He was sad as we walked away; I will never forget my anger and shame that Canada my country and the US allows this innhumane slaughter of horses. Oz

My Representative is Joe Barton (yep the guy who apologized to BP, so you know his heart belongs to BIG OIL and other large corps; and his huge bank account is thanks to them.) and he believes he is above the citizens and does as he and his rich buddies please. My Senators are Kay B Hutchinson (retiring, thank God) who swore that the anti-slaughter bills would not get out of committee and they didn’t because she is Co-chair of that committee. And John Cornyn who took more money from Big Ag than any other. They do not even care what Boone and Madeline Pickens say. I just get very frustrated with these damn Republicans who KNOW they own Texas. I’m ready to march!

I hate this as well, there is nothing good that will come from having the horses gone from the plains. Our wild horses and ponies of the coast have not been a target as of yet, but I fear they will become one. Being that I have no resources right now there is little I could do other then to be a voice and support. Seeing that I already speak out against slaughter of these animals that saved my life more then once. To people they think horses can be used for food, they are not to be eaten and were never meant to be. American has forgotten that this proud, free country was built on their backs and they laboured as much as the next human. The horse I own now all be it he is not a mustang, but a quarter horse. Would have been sent to either a sale or the slaughter houses because he was not able to be used as a lesson horse. No one would do anything with him because he scared them, in short I was his last chance. All those that stand for these beautiful, wild horses we are the last chance they have to survive. In all hope I pray that those in office will come to their senses before all is lost. Still to save all we can is better then to give up the fight that we know is the right one for those that have no voice to be heard in this matter.

WHY WON’T THEY HEAR US??????…..yeah….i do suppose i know that answer…..we are not rich ranchers padding the officials hands. we do not kiss the congresspersons butts.

did i not read something somewhere lately that there was some land the BLM or Gov or whomever was considering for some of these holding horses to be placed on? that rich lady….can’t remember her name…Perkins? or something?….was trying to make good things happen there….? what ever happened to all of that?

Her name is Madeline Pickens, her website is: https://www.savingamericasmustangs.org/ and the BLM finally “accepted her offer but it will require about 2 years of reviewing it” before they can make a final decision to turn the horses in storage out there! We’re back to the beginning – who is really running the country? It certainly isn’t those who are paid $275,000 a year to represent US!

two years! you have to be kidding!!!! i bet if some big-wig wanted this to happen…it would take a lot less longer then two years!!!!!!
so….in the two years that this is taking…..what will happen to the horses in the mean time? do you think the gov is delaying this so they can make other radical moves? like send all to slaughter? do you think the two yrs is just a ‘stall’?
i don’t like this ‘two years’ thing! it smells! like gov crap!

jadeh22….BLM is never going to release all the captive mustangs to Pickens ranch. They have been stalemating the offer of using this land for a long time. BLM reviewing the proposal after accepting is just to keep put off their real decision which not be liked by those concerned with the mustangs welfare. The horrid fear is that they are harvesting thousands of these mustangs by shipping them out for slaughter. 45,000 residing in holding pens and costing thousands and they will not release them to sanctuary. That alone should speak volumes.

It is corporate America who runs the country.

Yes, Jerry, I’m pissed!! It’s about time, or actually, it’s way past time to really get out there & DO something, something physical, something to let our ignorant, foolish, wimpy “leaders” know we are serious, dead serious! All the polite, law-abiding nice-guy stuff just doesn’t & will never, work. In all the time it takes to go through all the legal formalities, how many more wild horses & burros will be destroyed forever! And, what about all the American horses going to their grisley end at slaughter-houses! The only way any of this destruction will stop, is if we make it, FORCE it to STOP!! We need to somehow create a road-block, a barrier between them & the horses, somehow, take back what belongs to all of America. The same way they removed them, or, stole them from us, only our way would be more humane, no helicopters! We can all still write, email, call, “tweet”, or whatever, but we have to follow through, make good on our beliefs, & do something besides talk, we need to ALL get together & do the walk!!

I’m a protester from the 60′s. That works. It stopped a war. It gave minorities civil rights. It may stop horse slaughter and save the mustangs from extinction. It costs the people that participate. Are we mad enough? Are we brave enough? It will be harder in our 60′s than it was in our teens and twenties.

I’ve also been screaming, writing letters, sending emails, faxing, and making phone calls. It does seem like no one at the other end listens or cares one whit about it. My friends and family have grown weary of hearing me rant on and on about OUR wild horses, and this disgusting slaughter issue. I donate what I can to local rescues, but I know it’s just not enough to make a difference. Just like my single voice isn’t enough to make a difference where our wild horses are concerned, or to stop slaughter. Even the thousands of people who have written, called, faxed, etc, aren’t enough to make a difference, because no one in power gives a damn. Yes, I’m angry!!!

I HATE it! I absolutely HATE what our Government is NOT doing. They don’t listen to the Will of the People. They make back room deals that ensure that they scratch each others backs for votes.

And what happened to the Wild Horse Annie bill that is suppose to protect these horses! And Kennie Slaughterman won’t listen when we tell him that Callie DOESN’T represent the majority of us.

We need someone in Washington with the balls to take on these monsters in the Halls of Congress, we need someone who can address the whole darn load of Senators and tell them EXACTLY in no uncertain terms what they AREN’T doing and what it REALLY MEANS TO THE HORSES.

Ken Salazar use to be Salazoo but he’s now become Slaughterman. I will faithfully return his proper name to him when he swears by all that he is THAT NO HORSE WILL BE SENT TO SLAUGHTER.

And Slaughterhouse Sue now has an evil identical twin Slaughterhouse Callie. Lovely isn’t it? It’s not something I’d aspire to.

I love horses very much, I’m also a realist. I detest slaughtering Horses, I get flack for it from those that say, “Well, people eat cows and pigs and goats and chickens ect (I don’t like the way we kill and treat any of the food animals, personally), a horse makes no difference”. Horses in my belief, are not ‘food’ animals. And No living creature deserves the slaughterhouse fate. But horses, I feel if someone where in a DESPERATE situation and couldn’t keep the horse, (Such as:) No one will buy or take the horse off their hands, and there is no rescue that has an empty space (And PLEASE DON’T Turn the horse loose to fend for itself, it will die a slow terrible fate if it is not lucky). The only solution they see is to the auction or straight to slaughter (Some people really truely DO NOT CARE for the lives of other living beings). I feel that these people are missing a solution that most doen’t really see as an option. I hate even mentioning this option, but really, when it comes down to only two options left: 1. Sending the horse to a hellish journey to be slaughtered if they survive the trip there. or 2. HUMANELY EUTHANIZING the horse. the second choice would be the best option. If one truely cares, but has no other options, please, peacefully put the horse down. it really doesn’t cost that much to do so. $200 bucks is the average euthinasea price. You can aslo research or talk to a vet onhow to get rid of the body if you cannot bury the body. Please, if you do not have the time to even research this or even the money to do this one last loving favor, then you shouldn’t have had the horse in the first place. As for the beautiful wild horses out there, Their ancestors shaped America, we should treat the last of these wild herds with dignity and respect. Let them run free. Screw the cattle industry, those ranchers can get their own damn land. It is a sad fate of how things work these days; All about greed and power.

There are a handful of restaurants in Toronto that have horse meat on their menu. A number of us attend demos and protests outside them on a regular basis. There was a protest within the last couple of weeks even. Twist, are you anywhere near the GTA? We do a lot of screaming and nobody is hearing us, either.
Horse slaughter is big business for this country and, as long as breeders keep breeding for the ‘perfect’ million dollar horse, it will continue to be big business.
And as long as people consume livestock, the more land that livestock will be taking away to meet the demand.

Oh heck, just lost my comment. Here goes again. I agree with magiclady. Have been screaming for years except no one cares to hear. Calls, emails, letters you name it. I have been sitting on pins and needles waiting for that dreadful day when they announce that they are selling our horses enmasse to whoever can pull up a trailer fast enough. Won’t those ranchers who now are getting $2 million or more to warehouse our horses be a tad po’d at that. My fear is that they will start the process, if they haven’t already, and then announce that the horses are up for grabs come get ‘em just as the fully loaded kb’s trucks are pulling out of Dodge. I hope you have a real good idea Jerry as quite frankly I’m fresh out.

I am on a 220 acre ranch in what was a peaceful land for our horses, donkeys and all wild life with signs no hunting, private property. Two years ago the peace disappeared with the oil companies return to NorthTexas, directly across the road from my barn, under a quarter mile away is now a water distribution center for the eighteen wheelers to go in and out, none stop (except on Sundays before noon). The dust from their rocky road covers the trees and lots of foliage for 300-500 ft near our barn. The entrance to our ranch has huge limbs torn off from our trees as they make wide turns out of their plant. The smells linger across our property as it is due South of us and that is the dominate wind direction down our valley. Our well has gone dry and had to be dug deeper as they swallow the water down below the original water level. I write letters, I fax letters, but I don’t believe the BLM or senators or congressmen even look at or count. Our president has the deaf, dumb and blind attitude while hiding his head in the sand. WHAT MORE CAN I DO????????? i’ll continue to pray because I believe God is our loving master, who created all, and hopefully He will be the one to put an end to this disaster. l will continue donations and contributions to help where I cannot be personally. And Jerry, I pray for each one of you who endeavor to help our horses.

@Laurie – Furious also – and have done the same thing. My wife runs a rescue and has law enforcement and animal control working with her, but we had a change in control in our district and the previous rep was supportive, but the new one is not …. and he knows I won’t vote for him already. We’re busy fighting abuse and neglect in our area and are about to launch a new company to promote the healing power of horses to people suffering through emotional trauma …. in order to raise the awareness of horses potential to add value to our society …. and to get more people to “care” about what happens to them …. but that’s in it’s infancy …
Jerry – is it not possible to get some of the bigger org’s to get involved in raising awareness and support from the 80% of people? …. Like the ASPCA, the HSUS, etc? Can any other org’s involved with the wild horses – like the Cloud Foundation – work with you and all the individuals who care, to rally support, but have it centrally organized?
I know you are relentless in this – the wild horses – as well as your rescue. We have just been doing the rescue and healing and only have “reading” knowledge of the wild horses. But we know horses and are sick in our stomachs at Salazar, the ranchers and oil companies for their cruel, sadistic self interest.
Please let us know if we can aid any effort over here in the Carolina’s.

I am pissed! Would you do another blog on what we, the average Americans who abhor horse slaughter and want it to end, can do? Who do we contact to make our voices heard? Our representatives? I already know one of my reps, John Cornyn, stands with the ranchers and any others who ship horses to slaughter. I have already informed him I will no longer vote for him in any future elections. But, how do I really make my voice heard Jerry, to make a difference for horses?

Gather your facts, and write, call, e-mail, tweet your representative, your news papers, anyone you can think of. This is a good site for info. So is Equine Welfare Alliance. Many others. You’ll find ‘em
