One of the things I really enjoy doing this time of year is writing about happy events. After all, the holidays are supposed to translate into joy and a sense of completion. We’ve done a lot this year and while it isn’t time to sit back, take off our shoes and relax, it should be a time when we can look back on the memories of all that we’ve done, not only as an organization, but also as a nation, and draw from those memories a sense that it meant something good, that we moved ahead, made important changes and have accomplished great things.
This year I don’t even want to think about the nation as a whole. That should be left to the great minds, the philosophers, and the politicians. This organization is about equine, and while that isn’t our sole focus, it’s centered on increasing and enhancing their welfare. When the time comes for our moment of reflection, we will focus on what we have done, what we could have done better, and what we intend to do next year.
That’s a measure each of us should take, not only of ourselves, but as families, organizations, companies and governments. Let’s start the process with a look at equine welfare in the United States.
We have a President who made a campaign promise to end horse slaughter. We have a bill in the Senate and one in the House that will end horse slaughter. We have supporters on both sides that see the stupidity of subsidizing foreign companies so they can import the meat of American horses and sell it to butcher shops to satisfy the taste buds of some rich yahoo who thinks there is nothing better in life than to munch down on a Dobbin Burger.
One would think that conclusion is a no-brainer. The one thing that stopped these foreign meat importers from opening up horse slaughterhouses in this country again was that we stopped funding USDA meat inspectors in their plants. Why we would spend tax dollars so they could make money never made any sense anyway, but we’re talking about our government, so let’s skip over that part of the insanity.
This past week, that little equation suddenly disappeared in the massive funding bill that just got out of the conference committee. It was deleted, thanks not to the decision of the majority of the people in the US, but by three of the four members of the conference committee: Senators Herb Kohl, D-Wisc., and Roy Blunt, R-Mo., were joined by Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., in voting for the change. Only the fourth member of the conference committee, Rep. Sam Farr, D-Calif., objected.
The reality is that we lost. More than that, the horses lost. All the work, all the phone calls, and the rational appeals resulted in – nothing. The idiots are taking over again. “There’s money to be made in horses! Breed all the mares! Get them fat! The Europeans want them for supper!”
There’s no way to cover up the disgust and the anger which every horse person should feel right now. I used to think of those representatives in Washington really represented their constituents. I used to think that the majority in this country had a voice in government. I cannot believe I was that naive. While I’m not about to go out and hug all the “Occupy Wall Street” demonstrators right now I’m probably more upset than they ever thought about being. I have no idea what their final goal might be and while I might not be one of the 99% I can guarantee that I’m one of the 70% that does not believe horses should be slaughtered for human consumption.
Talking to politicians about horse slaughter is an absolute waste of time. While I can put words in their ears, there someone else stuffing money in their pockets. At the end of the day who do you think they are going to pay attention to?
This has been a personal fight of mine for the last 15 years. Now I find out that, thanks to the three supposed “representatives,” we are going to right back to slaughtering horses in America.
So what’s the answer? You tell me, because I guarantee you, I don’t know. I don’t understand what kind of human can walk out into the pasture at the ranch and see hamburger meat and steaks. I don’t know what kind of human can tell their children that they sent Old Dobbin off to the slaughterhouse.
But then again, there’s a lot in this world that I will never understand. Politicians who make promises that are never kept, veterinary associations that promote horse slaughter, breed associations that cull foals by putting them on the kill truck all fall under the same cloud of putting money before morals.
Perhaps this is what happens when life becomes so cheap that money becomes the new God.

This year we have seen big changes in countries that began with people joining through social media. I can not find the words to express my outrage over the shady behavior of our “leaders” in our country. I do beleive that many can make a change and in this age we have tools to have the voices of the many not only heard but followed.

Don’t give up!! This is not over – not by a long shot! I would certainly hate it if the European Union has to do this for us, but if we don’t do it ourselves, they will. Believe me, they DO know what’s going on.
By 2013, the EU – by far our biggest customer for horse meat – has already said they will NOT accept our horses if we are not on a traceability system comparable to their passport system. This would be far more expensive than the inspections – which at $5,000,000 tax dollars a year is not exactly cheap.
Keep writing your legislators telling them you will not stand for you tax money to be spent in such a way. Keep hammering on the food safety issue. Our horses are truly NOT safe to eat. Ask them how they can condone knowingly exporting tainted meat for consumers overseas.
James Moran – who wrote the amendment to defund the inspections that passed the house only to be stripped out in Conference Committee by the Infamous Three – has pledged to keep fighting. He has asked us to continue to write, fax, email or send him postcards letting him know that we are standing behind him all the way. Write to him NOW! Email page: https://moran.house.gov/contact-me/email-me Tell him you’ll fight with him until this outrage is quashed! 70% of the American people are solidly anti-horse slaughter. Get the word OUT!
I have collected tons of documentation. You are free to use any or all that you wish: http://www.box.com/shared/4fmi92iy70 Share it. Send it to your legislators!
Let’s go!
Beautiful post, Jerry. I plan to share it too. It won’t affect the Sue Walliss of the world, but there is only one of her (thank GOD!) and millions of us.

No, I’m afraid he was one of the three on the Conference Committee who stripped the defunding amendment out. Tell him what you think even though he is not running for re-election. Good thing, huh?

The day after Obama gave the green light to Shell to start exploring for oil in Alaska, the head
of the NRDC came out with a statement of grief. The NRDC and others spent thousands of
dollars trying to stop Shell. That same day Beinecke, the President of NRDC, said we have to
continue the fight. And so I think, we have to continue the fight for our horses. We have to assess in Congress who is for the horses and who is against. We have to get rid of those against. We have to find the key players who can help to stop the slaughter of our American horses. We are
David against Goliath, but we can’t give up and we can do it. We have to get ourselves out there to the American Public.

Well said Jerry. I for one am ashamed and disgusted to be from Georgia … I know Kingston does not represent me, my family, or my horse owner friends. He has no idea how much more live horses add to the economy. Its not that hard to stop eating beef!

These feelings of hopelessness and helplessness are exactly why the Occupy people are occupying. The American people are no longer represented by their “representatives.” Those representatives represent MONEY….the large corporations (including slaughter companies) who buy our “representatives” votes. The 1% who control the money in this country also, now, control the country.
Most Americans still eat cows and pigs; many people feel horse is no different.

Thanks for a heartfelt editorial. it is so hard not to become a total cynic when it comes to government. I cannot imagine that our elected officials would WILLFULLY vote for the slaughter of horses (but then I’m probably just being a Pollyanna.) What seems more likely is that they are doing a universally lousy job & that they don’t BOTHER to familiarize themselves with the details of the bills they sign. American politics has become the icon of self-serving greed & self-aggrandizing behavior. Personal & corporate interests trump the good of society & the environment every time. It is beyond depressing…and yes, it is truly infuriating. I have never participated in political rallies but I think it’s time to lend weight to the 99%ers.

Don’t give up! Tell everyone you know to call their Senator and Congressman and tell then we do NOT want our tax $$$ funding slaughter of America’s horses for the overseas market. Even if they do not care about horses or humane treatment of animals they DO care about cutting unnecessary government spending and keeping taxes low ….and the next election.

I live in London, Ontario – but I have been following your blog – and I didn’t read this article in full because I can’t even stand the thought that there are ‘civilized people’ out there doing this kind of cruelty and harm to horses! Politicians will always listen to the money talk – I feel such a sense of desperation over this – each and every day. I have worked with people/farms who rescue horses from slaughter – I have held their heads in my hand – I have seen the softness and love in their eyes – What do we do? On either side of the border – what CAN we do? I can’t give money – I’m broke – but I can give my support! My own horse is a rescue horse – he is the love of my life – I am at a loss – we can’t just stand here and know this is going on without doing something – BUT WHAT?! I can only think that this needs to reach the ear of a well known person – either a celebrity – or somebody in the news that is an animal right’s activist – and they can break this out publicly so that it isn’t just a whisper from a few -but an outright thunderous yell from millions – I don’t think there is enough publicity about what is going on – people don’t know that when they see a trailer full of horses going to Kitchener (the slaugher house here in SW Ontario) they are on the way to slaughter. They don’t know that there are foals, broodmares, and horses being squished alive by over crowding. Get it out to the media – make them angry – make the media tell the world what is going on! Let me know how I can help?

Karen Reeves,
All of us feel the desperation. For the last two years I’ve been an active wild horse advocate in Nevada. I am also a horse owner and I make my living boarding horses.
We HAVE reached the ears of many well known people. With celebrities like Willie Nelson, DarryI Hannah and Sheryl Crow speaking out in support of America’s wild horses, I never believed that horse slaughter proponents would be able to bring horse slaughter back to the US, but the power of money in the hands of a few corrupt politicians was able to speak louder than all of them.
WHAT can we do? For the time being, we can continue to inform every person we know about
the horrors of horse slaughter and the fact that both of our governments are caving in to the special interests of greedy, overseas corporations that are making millions yet pay no taxes in return for operating their hellish slaughterhouses in our countries. You’re right, there ISN’T enough publicity about what is going on… the majority of people DON’T KNOW that the trailer in front of them is full of sound, healthy horses on their way to the nightmarish end that is horse slaughter. The media, I’m afraid, will be of no help to us, as they are now controlled by the same corporate entities that fueled our financial downfall… to me, they are as much our enemy as the wealthy special interests that pay to keep our stories from being broadcasted.
But we horse lovers will NOT BE SILENCED and, in spite of the money that seeks to do just that, all I can say for now is, “YOU AIN’T SEEN NOTHING YET!”

My heart felt every word you wrote. It is exactly the way I feel. I don’t know how to stop this killing machine. I find myself not only beaten down, frustrated and sick to my stomach, I feel terrified. Terrified for the horses. I’ve begun a prayer vigil for our wild horses, and all the horses that end up on the path to slaughter. I’m not sure if it’s ok to ask God to strike down these people, but God will know the answer. It’s just hard to wait. Hugs to you Jerry.

We can’t give up, though…
